01Is it for you?
Is Il San Pietro right for your stay?
- Why choose it
- The sea at the foot of the cliff. The hotel has a private beach and sea platforms below it, and a lift cut through the rock takes you from the lobby down to the water; the rooms above, each one different, are carved into the cliff with terraces over the sea.
- Who it suits
- Couples, and families with children of ten and over, who want to swim from the hotel and have Positano a few minutes away by its shuttle. Caruso, in Ravello, is the other way round: height, quiet and gardens, the sea a drive or a boat away, and no minimum age.
- What to consider
- It is outside the town: Positano is a shuttle ride, not a walk — the shuttle runs round the clock — and the beach and the water shuttle depend on the sea. The hotel is generally open from April to October, and children under ten are not accepted.
02The hotel
The hotel and its rooms
Il San Pietro is Carlino Cinque’s hotel, cut into the cliff of the Laurito headland east of Positano. Half of the property is garden: ten terraces levelled out of the rock, organically certified, kept by four gardeners for the two restaurants and for the flowers in the rooms. Below them, at the foot of the cliff, are the hotel’s beach and its sea platforms, reached from the lobby by a lift cut through the rock or by four hundred stone steps.
The rooms are carved into the cliff above, each one different, with terraces that look out to sea and towards Praiano or, from the Positano-view rooms, back at the town. For the coast around it, our Amalfi Coast page covers the towns, when to go and the routes. The other Amalfi Coast hotel we feature is Caruso, at the top of Ravello: height, gardens and quiet instead of the water. Choosing one or the other changes the week, and Rome and the Amalfi Coast sets the two side by side.
Rooms and suites
The register counts 55 rooms and suites; the hotel gives no figure and says each room is unique, in nine grades. The practical choice is the terrace: the Classic rooms (from 22 m²) already have a private one over the sea, the Deluxe and Elite rooms larger furnished ones, and the Prestige rooms (from 70 m²) grand terraces over the coast. The Prestige rooms with a Positano view are the ones that look back at the town, Li Galli and Capri; the others look out to sea. At the top, the Virginia Suite takes a whole floor, with its own way into the pool and its own lift, and Carlino’s Prestige room was part of the founder’s apartment.
If the view — out to sea, or towards the town — the terrace or step-free access matters to you, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm it with the hotel for your dates before anything is booked.
On the practical side: from Naples the hotel suggests car and boat in summer, when the coast road is slow; we plan the transfer with you. The hotel’s shuttle runs to the centre of Positano round the clock, and a water shuttle goes from the beach dock to the town, sea permitting; private parking is complimentary; only small pets are accepted; children are welcome from the age of ten. The hotel is generally open from April to October; we confirm the dates for your year.

- The private beach and sea platforms at the foot of the cliff, reached by a lift cut through the rock from the lobby — or by 400 stone steps through the gardens — with a sun deck and a beach bar
- The pool, on a terrace facing the sea and Praiano
- A regulation tennis court between the rock face and the pebbles, with rackets and a coach on request
- A wellness centre and gym under a lemon orchard, with a Turkish bath and a Finnish shower, and Pilates or yoga on the lawn by the sea
- Gardens on ten terraces cut into the rock, half the property, organically certified and feeding both restaurants
- The hotel's two-hour coastal cruise, complimentary most days from May to mid-October, and two boats of its own for private charter
Eating and drinking
Zass is the restaurant, looking out over the sea to Praiano: Alois Vanlangenaeker’s cooking, Italian in its roots and painterly on the plate, from a kitchen supplied by the hotel’s own terraced gardens, which grow fruit, vegetables and herbs for its two restaurants. Carlino, named for the founder, is at the water’s edge by the beach — handmade pasta, grilled fish, lemons and tomatoes from the terraces above. The Terrace Bar looks at Positano, L’Alcova is the bar beside Zass, and Bits & Bites serves light dishes on the terrace. We reserve the tables.
03Location
Where Il San Pietro is
Il San Pietro stands on the Laurito headland, on the coast road from Positano towards Amalfi, with the town a few minutes away by the hotel’s shuttle. The map shows it with what is around it: Positano and its church of Santa Maria Assunta above the Spiaggia Grande to the west, and Praiano, the village the pool and the restaurant look across to, along the coast to the east. For the coast itself, see our Amalfi Coast page.
