01Where to stay
Palma, the island’s capital, lies on the bay of the same name, with La Seu, the Royal Palace of La Almudaina and a medieval old quarter; Son Vida is an estate in the hills above the city. Choose it for Palma’s culture and restaurants, and for golf: five 18-hole courses lie within the city’s municipal area.

The Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO cultural landscape since 2011, runs along the north-west: Deià is a stone village overlooking the sea, and Puigpunyent a village among orange and almond groves, close to Palma. Choose it for walking — the GR 221 dry-stone route passes through both — and for village life, with small coves on Deià’s coast.

Cala Blava, on the Bay of Palma in Llucmajor, looks across the water to the city; Canyamel, in Capdepera in the east of the island, is a beach with a valley behind it. Choose the coast for days on the water: the bay keeps Palma and the airport close, while Canyamel suits a stay near Capdepera’s castle and beaches.

Another base to consider
Sóller lies in a valley of orange and lemon groves in the Serra de Tramuntana, linked to Palma by a wooden train running since 1912 and to its port and beach by tram. None of our featured hotels is in Sóller; tell us if you would like to stay there.
