Experiences in Madrid

Each of these is arranged privately for your dates, subject to availability.

  • An equestrian statue on a tall column, framed between two curved stone colonnades with sculpted groups at their ends, under a deep blue sky

Art on the Paseo del Prado

The Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofía with a private guide, on a boulevard and park on the World Heritage List since 2021; then an afternoon in the Retiro.

    More of the art
    • The Prado with an art historian — Velázquez’s Las Meninas, Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights and Goya’s Black Paintings, in a museum open since 1819.
    • Before or after hours — the Prado takes private visits before it opens and after it closes, on request and subject to the museum’s conditions.
    • The Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofía — seven centuries of European painting, then Picasso’s Guernica, with tickets booked ahead.
    • The Retiro — 125 hectares of gardens at the end of the Paseo del Prado, on foot with a guide, or a picnic laid out for you there or in Madrid Río, on request.
  • A throne room hung in red velvet: two gilded thrones on a red-carpeted dais beneath a gilt canopy, bronze lions at the steps, gilt mirrors and chandeliers along the walls and a painted ceiling above

The Royal Palace and old Madrid

The Royal Palace with a private guide, a walk through the Madrid of the Austrias, an evening at the Teatro Real, and a day out to Toledo, Segovia or El Escorial.

    More of royal Madrid
    • The Royal Palace with a private guide — a baroque palace of more than 3,000 rooms, with works by Caravaggio, Velázquez and Goya.
    • Habsburg Madrid and the Gran Vía — an architectural walk from the Plaza Mayor and the Plaza de la Villa, the oldest part of the city, to the Gran Vía.
    • The Teatro Real — an evening of opera or a concert in the city’s opera house, open since 1850, with seats booked ahead.
    • Toledo and Segovia — a day out by car with a private guide, or to Toledo by high-speed train in 30 minutes; both old towns are on the World Heritage List. See Spain’s castles and palaces.
    • El Escorial — the monastery and palace Philip II built from 1563, on the World Heritage List since 1984, with a guide.
  • A tapas spread from above on dark wood: a baguette on an olive-wood board with slices of jamón and chorizo, patatas bravas, stuffed red peppers, anchovies and a bowl of olives

    Food, wine and evenings

Tapas through La Latina with a chef, a tasting menu at one of the city’s Michelin-starred restaurants, flamenco in a tablao, and a drink at sunset above the Gran Vía.

More of the table and the evenings
    • A tapas route — through La Latina or Chamberí; a professional chef can lead it where available.
    • Michelin-starred tables — a tasting menu at one of the city’s starred restaurants, reserved ahead; see our guide to Spanish gastronomy.
    • A private cooking class — Madrid’s own dishes, with a chef.
    • Wine and jamón — a tasting of Spanish wines with Iberian ham, in a wine cellar.
    • Flamenco — an evening in a tablao, with seats booked ahead.
    • The Salamanca district — shopping along the Golden Mile, with a personal stylist on request.
    • A slower afternoon — a hotel spa or a rooftop pool, a private yoga session, and dinner as the sun sets over the Gran Vía.

06Questions

Questions we are asked

What does it cost to have a tailor-made trip designed by Avelia Travel?

Every trip is priced individually. After discussing your plans, we prepare a tailored proposal with a quoted trip price and a clear outline of what is included.

How many nights should we spend in Madrid?

We recommend three or four nights for Madrid itself, and a week if you would like days out to Toledo, Segovia or El Escorial.

When is the best time to visit Madrid?

March to May and September to November. Spring brings San Isidro in May; in July and August the heat moves walking to the morning and the evening, with the museums for the afternoon; winter is cold, often bright and quieter.

Can I include Madrid in a larger Spain itinerary?

Yes. High-speed trains run from Madrid to Seville, Córdoba, Granada, Barcelona and Valencia; La Rioja and the Duero Valley are wine country to the north, and Mallorca and Ibiza a flight away. Our luxury trip planning page explains how a trip with several stops comes together.

Do you only plan full itineraries, or can you help with just a hotel?

Both. We plan complete trips, and we also arrange a stay on its own: a hotel matched to you, with transfers, a guide or a few reservations added if you wish.

Is Avelia right for me?

Avelia suits travellers who want a private, well-paced trip planned around them: the right places in the right order, hotels chosen for them, guides who know the ground, tables and tickets taken care of, and one point of contact from the first conversation until they are home.
