Why we plan slowly

Two regions given time beat four glimpsed. Spain is large and its regions are nothing alike, and a trip that tries to take in all of them spends its days in cars and stations. We would rather you came to know a few places well: fewer moves, longer stays, and days built around what is there, with people who know the ground.

How we choose hotels

For their size and character before their brand. We look for places where the owner or the family is present, where the staff stay, and which suit the way you travel rather than the ones everyone has heard of. No hotel is on our list simply because it sits on a preferred-partner programme.

What the people we work with make possible

A few of the days we arrange — two of them ones that few people think to ask for — and what each one includes.

A winery in La Rioja. At Marqués de Riscal in Elciego, beside Frank Gehry’s titanium-clad building: a visit to the winery, founded in 1858, and its vineyard, then a tasting of three of its wines with cheese and chorizo from Rioja — and a driver for the day, so no one has to drive after it. Flamenco in Seville. A performance at Casa de la Memoria, a flamenco venue in the old centre, seen up close — or a private performance, arranged on request.

An Arab bath beneath the Alhambra. Hammam Al Ándalus, on Calle Santa Ana by Plaza Nueva in Granada: a slow circuit of baths at different temperatures, and a massage if you want one.

A day in the desert. The badlands of Gorafe, in Granada province, with a guide, by 4x4 and on foot: the red clay of Los Coloraos, and the dolmens of the Megalithic Park — more than 240 of them, one of the largest groups of prehistoric tombs in Europe. It is a day of our Spanish Family Adventure, and it can be part of any trip through Andalusia.
