How you travel
Seven nights, as set out here: three in Rome and four in Ravello. An extra night in Rome, at the start or for the flight home, lengthens the journey and its price. The transfers are these: a driver from Fiumicino, some 32 km out, to your hotel; on the fourth morning the high-speed train from Roma Termini to Naples in first class, about an hour, and your driver on to Ravello — an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half by the hotel’s reckoning, longer in summer traffic — or, if you would rather not take the coast road, the train on to Salerno, a boat along the coast to Amalfi and a short drive up to Ravello; and on the last morning a driver to the airport. In Rome the days are on foot, with a car where a visit needs one; on the coast the drivers and the boat are booked for the days named below. The airport you leave from, Naples or Rome, is chosen around your flights and your dates; a connection through Rome is planned only once the whole journey — the train, the transfer and check-in — has been checked, and otherwise a last night in Rome is added. The season runs from April to October: spring and autumn are for the sights and the terraces, the reliable swimming weather is high summer, and July and August are when the coast road and the boats are at their busiest.

Days 1–3
Rome, the ancient city and the Vatican
Rome first: three nights, a guided day in the ancient city and a guided day at the Vatican, and the evenings yours.
Day1
Arrival in Rome
A driver meets you at Fiumicino; in the evening, a first walk from Piazza del Popolo to the Spanish Steps, and dinner.
More about this day: Day 1, Arrival in Rome
Your driver meets you at Fiumicino and takes you to your hotel; nothing else is fixed today. In the evening a first walk, from Piazza del Popolo along the streets Sixtus V laid out in the 1580s to the Spanish Steps, and dinner nearby, at a table we reserve.
Piazza del Popolo from the Pincio Day2
The Colosseum, the Forum and the Palatine
Ancient Rome with your own guide in the morning, the afternoon free, and dinner in Trastevere at a table we reserve.
More about this day: Day 2, The Colosseum, the Forum and the Palatine
The morning with your own guide in ancient Rome — the Colosseum, the Forum and the Palatine, with standard admission. The passages beneath the arena, where men and animals waited to be hoisted up through trapdoors, are on the Park’s own Full Experience ticket, a separate ticket type with limited availability, on request. The afternoon is free. In the evening, dinner in Trastevere at a table we reserve; a food walk through the quarter with a guide is an option.
The Colosseum at sunrise Day3
The Vatican Museums and St Peter's
The Vatican with a private guide, from the Museums to the Sistine Chapel and St Peter's, and the afternoon your own.
More about this day: Day 3, The Vatican Museums and St Peter's
The morning with a private guide at the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, with standard admission, then St Peter’s, the work of Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, Bernini and Maderno. An early entry to the Museums can sometimes be arranged, on request and subject to availability, and is priced separately. The afternoon is free. If you want one more thing, the Galleria Borghese with a guide is an option, for Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne; we reserve it as soon as your dates are fixed.
St Peter's Basilica

Days 4–8
The Amalfi Coast, from Ravello
Then the Amalfi Coast: four nights in Ravello, high above the sea and quiet after Rome, among its gardens, with Amalfi below, a private boat day to Capri, and days of nothing at all.
Day4
South to Ravello
The train to Naples and your driver on to Ravello, then a free afternoon: the hotel's pool and Villa Rufolo's gardens.
More about this day: Day 4, South to Ravello
The morning high-speed train to Naples, seats reserved, about an hour, where your driver waits; Ravello is an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half on from the station by the hotel’s reckoning, longer in summer traffic. The afternoon is free: the hotel’s pool, and a few steps away the gardens of Villa Rufolo, built in the 13th century, in which Wagner found the magic garden of Klingsor.
Day5
Amalfi, and Ravello's gardens
Down to Amalfi by the hotel's shuttle for the morning, then back up to Ravello for Villa Cimbrone's gardens and a long lunch.
More about this day: Day 5, Amalfi, and Ravello's gardens
No transfers to speak of: down to Amalfi by the hotel’s shuttle, about a quarter of an hour by the hotel’s reckoning, and the morning in the town at your own pace, or with a historian as an option — the town of the Maritime Republic, with the Cathedral of St Andrew at the top of its great staircase and the Cloister of Paradise beside it. Back up to Ravello for Villa Cimbrone’s gardens, out to the Terrace of Infinity, and a long lunch at a table we reserve. As an option for the afternoon, a private boat along the coast with a swim at a beach that can only be reached by sea.
Day6
Capri, by private boat
A private boat from Amalfi's harbour to Capri and around the Faraglioni, with lunch below the rocks, weather and sea permitting.
More about this day: Day 6, Capri, by private boat
The boat day. The hotel’s shuttle or your driver takes you down to Amalfi’s harbour, where a private boat is yours for the day, weather and sea permitting: across to Capri, around the island under the Faraglioni, lunch at a beach club below the rocks, and back to Amalfi and up to Ravello at the end of the afternoon. The Blue Grotto depends on the sea and the tide: its rowing boats go in only when conditions allow, and a visit cannot be guaranteed. The boats run from spring to early autumn, and we confirm the services for your dates. As an option, instead of Capri or as an extra day: Pompeii with your driver and an archaeologist, the Roman town buried by the eruption of AD 79, on the World Heritage List since 1997.
A boat off Capri Day7
A free day in Ravello
Nothing is fixed: as options, a cooking lesson above the sea or the Path of the Gods with a guide, or nothing at all.
More about this day: Day 7, A free day in Ravello
Nothing is fixed. As options: a cooking lesson in a family kitchen above the sea, among the lemon trees of the sfusato amalfitano — a school in Ravello offers one; we ask for a place for your date and nothing is arranged until it confirms; or, for the fit, the Path of the Gods with a guide, on foot from Agerola high above the sea down to Positano, with a boat back; or nothing at all, which is what the fourth night is for.
Day8
Home
Breakfast above the sea, then your driver to the airport, Naples or Rome, chosen around your flights and your dates.
More about this day: Day 8, Home
Breakfast above the sea, then your driver to the airport. Which one, Naples or Rome, we choose around your flights and your dates; if the way home is through Rome, we plan it only after checking the whole journey, the train, the transfer and check-in, and otherwise add a last night in Rome as an extension.
Where you stay
Days 1–3
Rome
Our recommendation in Rome is Hotel de Russie, between Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps; the alternative is the Hotel Eden, above the Steps on the Ludovisi hill. Either is chosen with you.

Days 4–8
The coast
Our recommendation on the coast is Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, at the top of Ravello above the sea; the alternative, for guests who prefer direct sea access and whose party meets the hotel’s children policy, is Il San Pietro di Positano, with Positano’s only private hotel beach, reached by a lift cut into the rock.

If you base yourself in Positano instead
A Positano base changes the logistics, not only the view. The drive from Naples runs further along the coast road, which the hotel itself suggests breaking with a boat in summer traffic, and the road is at its busiest in July and August. The Capri boats leave from Positano itself, and the hotel has a dock of its own, so the boat day starts at the door; Ravello and Amalfi, in turn, become a day out by boat or by car, about an hour away by road by the hotels’ reckoning. The hotel’s season and its children policy apply, and because the two hotels are priced per date, the two bases are not interchangeable at the same cost: we quote each for your dates.
