01Where to stay
The island’s largest resort town, in the municipality of Tías on the south coast, where a line of golden-sand beaches — Playa Chica, Playa Grande, Los Pocillos and Matagorda — runs along the Avenida de las Playas with a promenade of bars, restaurants and shops behind it. Choose it for a beach and a town on the doorstep, and for diving: Playa Chica is one of the island’s main diving spots, with schools on the sand.
Lanzarote's first hotel, reopened in 2020 after a rebuild: 213 sea-view rooms in a mature tropical garden, with direct access to three beaches.

A marina on the south coast in the municipality of Yaiza, between Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca, built around its berths and lined with shops and restaurants to stroll past. Choose it for quiet: there is no town behind it, and boats for the Papagayo coast and the dolphin routes leave from the quay.
An adults-only five-star resort of 335 rooms and suites on the coast above Puerto Calero marina, run on an all-inclusive basis with a spa and four heated pools.
Suits Couples who want everything included and no children, with a spa, several restaurants and a marina to walk to.
The resort at the southern tip of the island, also in Yaiza, with the beaches of Dorada and Flamingo, the Marina Rubicón and a view across the strait to Fuerteventura. Choose it for the beaches of the Monumento Natural de Los Ajaches — Papagayo is the best known — and for the ferry to Fuerteventura, which crosses in 25 to 35 minutes.
A five-star Lujo suite resort of 330 suites on the seafront at Playa Blanca, with nine restaurants, a thalassotherapy centre and a large open-air children's park.
Suits Families who want space, the beach and a children's programme, and couples who want a resort with a thalassotherapy centre and a choice of restaurants.
Another town to consider
The island’s old capital, a listed historic town, which holds a Sunday market in its centre. Below it, Caleta de Famara is a white-and-blue fishing village under the Risco de Famara cliffs, where the surf schools are, and Órzola further east is the only place boats leave for La Graciosa.
