02The hotel
The hotel and its rooms
Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine is the abbey of Santa María de Retuerta, founded in the twelfth century beside the Duero and restored as a hotel. Its buildings span six centuries, from the Romanesque apses of its church to a 16th-century cloister and an 18th-century guesthouse, and it keeps its chapter house, refectory and dormitory too. The abbey is a Bien de Interés Cultural, one of Spain’s protected monuments.
The vineyards around it are the estate’s own, and their wines carry a protected designation of origin of their own name, Abadía Retuerta.
Rooms and suites
Every room looks over the vineyards, by the hotel’s own account, and all are soundproofed, with oak floors, stucco walls, walnut furniture designed for the house, and a bathroom with a separate bath and shower. The Classic Double rooms, from 30 m², have a queen-size bed; the Superior Double rooms, from 35 m², add space; and the Superior Twin, from 30 m², has two single beds. The Classic and Superior doubles also come in a version the hotel calls “with garden”.
There are three suites. The Junior Suite, from 63 m², has a king-size canopy bed and a Carrara marble bathroom; the Master Suite, from 100 m², adds a sitting room and a dressing room; and the Two-bedroom Master Suite, from 105 m², pairs a double bedroom with a twin around a sitting room, with two bathrooms. A stay in a suite includes a visit to the estate and the winery, with a tasting of its wines.

On the practical side, breakfast, served à la carte, is included, and so is access to the Santuario, booked ahead. One of the double rooms is adapted for guests with disabilities. The hotel runs a shuttle on request, has its own heliport, and accepts pets in some rooms by arrangement. We arrange the private transfer from Madrid or Valladolid.

Eating and drinking
Refectorio is the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant, set in the monastery’s old refectory: cooking of the region, led by the season and the produce of the area, with wine as its inspiration, in two menus. It serves dinner from Wednesday to Saturday and lunch on Sunday. Vinoteca, a contemporary Castilian tavern above the abbey’s old storehouse, cooks from the market and the garden in dishes for sharing, with up to 40 wines to taste. The Chapter Room, the Romanesque chapter house beside the cloister, is now a bar for a quiet cocktail.
In summer the house moves outdoors. The Terrace of the Hospedería, for guests, serves the region’s classic cooking at lunch and cocktails after, with a telescope for the night sky on some dates; Vinoteca’s menu and breakfast move to the Cloister Garden; and Calicata, the wine bar at the winery, among vines and pine woods, pairs local produce with the estate’s wines. El Huerto de los Monjes, the hotel’s organic garden, supplies the kitchens with fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers.
03Location
Where Abadía Retuerta is
Abadía Retuerta stands among its own vineyards beside the Duero, in the municipality of Sardón de Duero, east of Valladolid on the N-122, the road that follows the river towards Soria. The map shows it with the village of Quintanilla de Onésimo upstream, Peñafiel and its castle further east, and Tudela de Duero downstream, towards Valladolid.
