The roof, and the dining on it. Both restaurants and the bar sit on top of the hotel on the Ludovisi hill, above the Spanish Steps, so a drink or dinner comes with Rome spread out in front of you; the hotel's own words are for sunset. Via Ludovisi is a side street off Via Veneto, away from the shopping streets below.
Who it suits
Couples and anyone marking an occasion, and a first visit that wants the view. Families are welcome too — an extra bed is free for a guest of any age from the Junior Suites upwards, and the Ludovisi Suite has two bedrooms for five — but Hotel de Russie, with its garden and children's programme, is the family house of the two.
What to consider
There is no swimming pool here, nor at Hotel de Russie, and the spa is a small one: three private suites rather than a thermal circuit. The hotel says early check-in "can be guaranteed up to one hour before" and late check-out "up to two hours after standard times"; anything beyond that is, in its words, "subject to availability" and unlikely during major events.
02The hotel
The hotel and its rooms
Hotel Eden began as a block of apartments on the Ludovisi hill that a hotelier,
Francesco Nistelweck, turned into a hotel; his family ran it for close to a
century. Its bar moved up to the roof to make the most of the view, and the
restaurant followed it there. Dorchester Collection took the hotel on as its
first in Rome and reopened it after a restoration from top to bottom.
Rooms and suites
The entry rooms are the Classic Rooms, from 28 m², and the Prestige
Rooms, from 35 m² with higher ceilings; both come in plain, with View
and with View and Balcony versions, and the view is the point of this
address — the balcony rooms sit on the fifth floor. If the view is why you
are coming, the rooms and suites sold “with View” are the ones to ask for:
the Junior Suite with View (47–60 m², for three), the Classic Suite
with View and the Prestige Suites, most of which look over the city.
The two-bedroom option is the Ludovisi Suite, 93 m², for up to five;
above it sit the named signature suites, up to the Bellavista Penthouse
Suite on the roof. Several categories connect, and the hotel has four
accessible rooms.
Tell us when you enquire which view, which bed arrangement and whether
step-free access matters, and we confirm it with the hotel for your dates
before anything is booked.
On the practical side: the hotel has no garage of its own and offers
valet parking in a private garage nearby, subject to availability; we
arrange the transfer from Fiumicino or Ciampino with the hotel’s concierge.
Up to two small dogs are welcome.
At the hotel
Facilities
The Eden Spa: three private spa suites, among them a suite for two, each with its own changing room, bathroom, steam room and chromotherapy shower, and a nail suite
A fitness room with Technogym equipment, open round the clock
A rooftop on the sixth floor shared by La Terrazza, Il Giardino Ristorante and Il Giardino Bar
An extra bed at no charge for a guest of any age, from the Junior Suites upwards
Eating and drinking
La Terrazza is Salvatore Bianco’s restaurant, on the roof: dishes
“inspired by Rome’s rich culinary heritage”, in the hotel’s words, served
with the city below. Il Giardino Ristorante, beside it, serves classic
Italian cooking with the hotel’s own twist through the day, and breakfast
is taken there; once a month a guest chef cooks its Sunday lunch with
Bianco in the “Taste Society” series. Il Giardino Bar is the rooftop
bar, and its own cocktail is made for sunset. Downstairs, La Libreria is
a sitting room with a bar of its own, for morning coffee, an aperitivo or
the last grappa of the night. We reserve the tables.
03Location
Where Hotel Eden is
Hotel Eden stands at 49 Via Ludovisi, on the hill above the Spanish
Steps in the Ludovisi rione, with the gardens of Villa Borghese beside
it. By a pedestrian route it is under ten minutes’ walk down to Piazza di
Spagna and about a quarter of an hour to the Trevi Fountain — approximate
times, downhill going and uphill coming back — and the Vatican is about
half an hour’s drive by the hotel’s own estimate, longer in traffic. The
map shows it with what is around it: Piazza di Spagna below, the Villa
Medici and the Pincio to the west, Villa Borghese and the Porta Pinciana
above, and Piazza Barberini and the Trevi Fountain to the south.
Hotel de Russie,
the other Rome hotel we feature, is at the far end of Via del Babuino, by
Piazza del Popolo. For the city itself, see our
Rome page.
