01Is it for you?

Is Hotel de Russie right for your stay?

Why choose it
The garden, and the family programme. A terraced garden climbs the foot of the Pincio behind the house, with the restaurant's terrace and the bar's piazzetta in it; the garden-side rooms look into it, and the hotel has two-bedroom family rooms and suites and a children's programme for every age.
Who it suits
Families, and couples who would rather have a garden than a view. It stands at the Piazza del Popolo end of Via del Babuino, a few minutes' walk from the square and about ten from the Spanish Steps. If a rooftop and dinner with Rome below you matter more, Hotel Eden, on the hill above the Steps, is the other choice.
What to consider
There is no swimming pool here, nor at Hotel Eden: the spa has a saltwater hydro pool, sauna and steam room. Garden-view rooms are a separate category from city-view rooms at every level, so the side you want is a choice to make when booking.

02The hotel

The hotel and its rooms

Hotel de Russie occupies a palazzo on Via del Babuino designed by Giuseppe Valadier, the architect who gave Piazza del Popolo its present shape, and its garden — terraces, balustrades, basins and fountains climbing the foot of the Pincio — is his too. The house became a hotel in the 1820s, served for decades as offices, and was brought back as a hotel by Rocco Forte Hotels, with interiors by Tommaso Ziffer under Olga Polizzi, the group’s director of design. The garden has since been restored to Valadier’s layout.

Rooms and suites

The first choice is the side: at every level the hotel sells a garden-facing version and a city-facing one (the city rooms look onto Via del Babuino or the inner courtyard), and the garden is the reason to come. The entry rooms are the Superior Rooms, 33 m²; the Deluxe Rooms add a sitting area, and the garden-view Deluxe is 45 m². Above them come the Junior Suites, from 45 m², the Suites, from 63 m², and the named Forte Suites with terraces — the Valadier and Picasso over the garden, the Popolo over Piazza del Popolo. In every category it lists, the hotel says the bed is a king that can be made up as twins.

For a family the hotel confirms three two-bedroom options: the Family Room of 80 m² (two Deluxe Rooms connected, for four), and the Family Junior Suite and Family Suite Garden View, each 100 m²; the Picasso, Popolo and Nijinsky Suites also come in two-bedroom versions. Extra beds and interconnecting rooms are on request.

Tell us when you enquire which side, which bed arrangement and whether step-free access matters, and we confirm it with the hotel for your dates before anything is booked.

On the practical side: the hotel’s main entrance is on Via del Babuino, a street inside the centre’s limited-traffic zone, so we arrange the transfer from Fiumicino or Ciampino with the hotel; babysitting is available on request.

03Location

Where Hotel de Russie is

Hotel de Russie stands at 9 Via del Babuino, at the Piazza del Popolo end of the street that runs down to Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps, in the Campo Marzio rione: a few minutes’ walk to the square and about ten to the Steps, by a pedestrian route. Its garden climbs the slope of the Pincio, with Villa Borghese above. The map shows it with what is around it: Piazza del Popolo at one end of the street, Piazza di Spagna at the other, the Pincio terrace above the garden and the Mausoleum of Augustus towards the river. Hotel Eden, the other Rome hotel we feature, is on the hill above the Steps. For the city itself, see our Rome page.
