02The hotel
The building was designed by the architect José María Mendoza Ussía, and it was first the seat of the Papelera Española, a paper company from Vizcaya. Outside, it keeps its neoclassical dress: the towers, the chamfered corners, and the miradores that carry the main balcony. Inside, the original central patio, the coloured stained glass, the decorative tiles, the library, the marble floors and the wood-panelled walls are all still there.
The rooms begin with the Urso Superior and the Deluxe, both with a marble bathroom with a separate bath and shower, and the Deluxe, in the hotel’s words, spacious and very luminous. The Deluxe Palace View and Junior Suite Palace View rooms look over the garden of the neighbouring Villagonzalo Palace, and the hotel recommends them for quiet. The Junior Suites add a sitting area, and the Junior Suite Terrace rooms, in the towers of the main façade, a large private terrace. The Urso Suite has a separate living room and a marble bathroom with a separate bath and shower; the Urso Suite Terrace, on the top floor, adds a large terrace with room both to sit and to dine.
For families, the Urso Family joins a Junior Suite to an Urso Superior by a private hall, each with its own bathroom, and the Urso Family Suite joins an Urso Suite to an Urso Superior: two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a living room. Every room can be made up with a king-size bed or two singles, and is turned down each evening.

On the practical side: there is parking at the hotel, for a charge; two Urso Superior rooms are adapted for guests with reduced mobility; and the hotel takes one dog of up to 8 kg, with a supplement and on request, in the room types it marks as pet-friendly. Madrid-Barajas airport is 20 to 30 minutes away by taxi, depending on traffic, and we arrange a private transfer. Alonso Martínez metro station is about two minutes’ walk.
Casa Felisa is the hotel’s restaurant: Madrid fine dining with touches of eccentricity, taking new and old approaches to Spanish tradition, with a cellar of Spanish wines and a list of champagnes. The Lobby Bar serves cocktails, champagne by the glass and informal food through the day, by windows onto the street, with a Spanish merienda in the afternoon and piano evenings several days a week. Breakfast is in the Conservatory, under a stained-glass roof among palms and a living wall, with hot dishes prepared in the kitchen, and on weekends and holidays it hosts a brunch with live music. All three are open to non-residents too.
03Location
Urso stands on Calle de Mejía Lequerica in Justicia, the barrio of the Centro district that takes in Chueca and the Salesas Reales; Chamberí begins across Calle de Sagasta, to the north. The map shows it with what is around it: the Museo del Romanticismo round the corner, the Plaza de Chueca and the Salesas Reales church, and a little further, the Plaza de Colón and Malasaña’s Plaza del Dos de Mayo.
