Mallorca guide
The sea, the mountain villages and a house for the two of you, planned around your days on the island.
By Ramin Jafari · Facts checked
For a honeymoon in Mallorca, we would give the island five to seven nights in one or two of its best houses, in the mountains at Deià or by the sea, and fill them with a day on a private boat among the coves, the villages of the Serra de Tramuntana, Palma’s old town and a tasting menu at sunset. The same plan suits an anniversary or a few days away for two. It is one of our honeymoon trips to Spain.

Where to stay
Three houses, for a stay in two bases: a fortress on the sea, a village above the east coast, and twin manor houses in the mountains.
Cala Blava
A 19th-century fortress in a coastal nature reserve on the Bay of Palma, with a spa 12 metres below ground and two restaurants.
Canyamel
A five-star resort of 142 rooms built like a Mallorcan village in the Canyamel valley, home to the two-Michelin-star VORO.
Deià
Twin 16th- and 17th-century manor houses on a Deià hillside, with 67 rooms, a spa, indoor and outdoor pools and an art gallery.
Cap Rocat is the most private of the three: a fortress of the 1890s on its own headland on the Bay of Palma, with 31 rooms, the Sentinels among them, set into the rock with a private pool and terraces at the edge of the cliff, and a spa twelve metres below ground; its restaurants take children only over 15. Cap Vermell Grand Hotel, built like a village above the Canyamel valley on the east coast, has a couples’ suite in its Serenitas Spa and VORO, the island’s only restaurant with two MICHELIN Stars. Belmond La Residencia is two manor houses of the 16th and 17th centuries in the village of Deià, with the Tramuntana around it and an art gallery and studios of its own.
Every hotel we recommend on the island, by area, is on our where to stay in Mallorca page.
Five things we arrange for couples on the island, each private and planned around your days.
The coves of the north and the south-east
A boat with a skipper for the two of you, out to the coves to swim and snorkel, with lunch on board, or out in the evening for an aperitivo as the sun goes down. The skipper chooses the bay on the morning, by the wind. On request, subject to availability.
Inland, between Palma and the mountains
Mallorca’s first wine designation, recognised in 1990, lies inland around Binissalem and Santa Maria del Camí. A tasting at a family-run estate, with the island’s cheese and sobrassada, and the winemaker to host it where one is free.
At the hotels
The spas are the hotels’ own: at Cap Rocat a saltwater pool, a hammam and a massage suite cut into the rock twelve metres below ground; at Cap Vermell a couples’ suite in the Serenitas Spa; and in the hills at Puigpunyent, the Grand Hotel Son Net’s thousand square metres, with a thermal circuit. We book the treatments with the stay.
Around the island
A tasting menu at one of the island’s MICHELIN-starred restaurants, VORO among them, with its two Stars, timed for the evening light, a table on the terrace asked for, and a driver there and back. Where to eat is in our Mallorca food and cuisine guide.
The Serra de Tramuntana
A guided walk in the mountains above the north-west coast, at your pace and with a picnic of the island’s produce on the way. More of the island is in our things to do in Mallorca.
Five days
A starting point we then shape around you: the sea, Palma, the mountains, a day on the water and the wine country.
Day 1
Afternoon
A driver meets you at Palma’s airport and takes you to your hotel.
Evening
A private boat along the coast as the sun goes down, with tapas and a glass of the island’s wine.

Afternoon
The spa, for the two of you.
Evening
Dinner in Palma’s old town.
Day 3
Morning
Valldemossa, where Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838–39 in the Charterhouse, and Deià, where the poet Robert Graves lived until 1985.
Afternoon
A walk in the Serra de Tramuntana, and an aperitivo at sunset. A massage at the hotel on your return, if you wish.
Day 4
Day
A full day on a private boat among the coves and bays, to swim, snorkel or do nothing at all.
Evening
A tasting menu at one of the island’s starred restaurants.
Day 5
Morning
A tasting at a family estate in Binissalem.
Afternoon
The last hours by the pool or in a village nearby, then a driver to the airport.
For the villages and the mountains, Mallorca’s best months are March to May and September to November. May brings highs of about 24°C (75°F) and June about 28°C (82°F), before the busiest weeks. July and August are the season for the sea, and the island’s fullest, with average highs of about 31°C (88°F); we reserve boats, beach clubs and tables well ahead. In September the grapes are harvested, with Binissalem’s Festa des Vermar through the month, and October is the wettest month, with rain on about six days.
Most hotels open from April or May to October. Of our three, Cap Rocat is open in March and November too, from mid-March to mid-November, and Belmond La Residencia reopens in March after its winter closure. Month by month, see our best time to visit Mallorca.
