02The hotel
Belmond La Residencia is two manor houses of the 16th and 17th centuries, once home to Cistercian monks, standing together on a hillside inside the village of Deià. They opened as a hotel in 1984.
The rooms are spread between the two houses and the terraces below them, with the spa, the indoor pool and the art studios among the olive groves around. Sa Tafona shows work by a resident artist, and Restaurante Miró hangs a selection of Joan Miró’s.
For the island around it, our Mallorca travel guide covers what to see and when to go, and where to stay in Mallorca sets out the bases with our hotels compared side by side.
Sixty-seven rooms and suites, including three signature suites and a villa, spread between the two manor houses and the terraces below them. Many have a terrace or balcony over the village, the mountains or the sea, and the Executive Junior Suites add a private plunge pool.
Villa Robert Graves is a house of its own, a five-minute walk from the hotel: 170 m², three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room with a fireplace, and a terrace with a barbecue and a heated private pool, for up to six.
On the practical side: the hotel closes for the winter and reopens in March, and a shuttle runs to Cala Deià in summer.
El Olivo is in the hotel’s old oil mill, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, with a tasting menu and a vegetarian one from chef Pablo Aranda. Restaurante Miró is named after Joan Miró and shows a selection of his work; the Tramuntana Grill cooks over a charcoal oven beside the pool from April; and breakfast is at Son Fony.
03Location
Deià sits on the seaward side of the Tramuntana, on the winding coast road between Valldemossa and Sóller. The hotel is inside the village rather than above it, which is why the walk to the cove and the walk to dinner are the same kind of walk.
