The Explorer
Eleven grand hotels we recommend in six places, and how to choose between them.
By Ramin Jafari · Published · Updated
The five-star hotels we recommend in Spain are eleven, in six places: the Mandarin Oriental Ritz and Rosewood Villa Magna in Madrid; Hotel Arts and W Barcelona on Barcelona’s beachfront; Hotel Alfonso XIII and Eurostars Torre Sevilla in Seville; Marbella Club and Puente Romano on Marbella’s Golden Mile; Castillo Hotel Son Vida and Cap Vermell Grand Hotel on Mallorca; and Hotel María Cristina in San Sebastián. They are the larger houses; for smaller ones, see our ten boutique hotels.

Choosing
Spain has no single star system. Each region classifies its own hotels and keeps its own register, in its own words: Andalusia’s highest category is five stars “with the distinction Gran Lujo”, Catalonia’s is Gran luxe, a step above five stars, and Madrid’s register writes “5 estrellas L”, for Lujo. Every hotel on this page is in its region’s top categories, and each hotel’s own page gives its category and room count as the register records them.
Beyond the category, the choice is the kind of stay. A grand hotel between the museums suits a week of art in Madrid; a resort on the sand, long days by the sea in Marbella; a castle above Palma, golf and quiet. For more on each city, our Spain guides cover where to stay, what to do and when to go.
Choose by the Madrid you came for, the museums or the shops. Every hotel we recommend in the city is on our where to stay in Madrid page.

Both stand on the sea, at either end of the Barceloneta’s beaches, for a stay in Barcelona and a beach stay at once. Hotel Arts is being renovated until June 2027, with some spaces closed at times; its page has the detail. More of the city’s hotels are in our Barcelona accommodation guide and our guide to the best luxury hotels in Barcelona.
