Which hotel for which stay
Which of the four suits which stay: the table, a house with a history, a pool, two of you, a spa or a family.
For the table. Hotel Arts, home of chef Paco Pérez’s Enoteca: Mediterranean cooking from the sea, the farm and the mountain, and more than 700 wines.
For a house with a history. Cotton House, a 19th-century house that was once the cotton guild’s headquarters, and Hotel Alma, behind an early 20th-century Eixample façade.
For a pool. On the roof at Cotton House, for its guests; over the sea at W, with an infinity pool among its two outdoor pools; in the gardens at Hotel Arts, two, open in summer.
For two. Hotel Alma’s garden and spa in the middle of the city, or the adults-only pool at Hotel Arts.
For a spa. Hotel Alma’s, with a heated indoor pool and a sauna, or W’s AWAY Spa, with an area for adults only.
For a family. W, where some rooms of every type connect and two suites have two and three bedrooms; Hotel Arts, with a family pool and its Arts Kids programme. Hotel Arts is being renovated until June 2027, and some of its spaces may close for a time until then.

Barcelona has both, and each is a different stay. Two of our four are houses of a few dozen rooms: Hotel Alma, with 72, and Cotton House, with 83, both in the Eixample. The other two are the towers on the sea: W, with 477, and Hotel Arts, with 494, each with several restaurants and pools.

Ildefons Cerdà’s grid, approved in 1860, where the modernists built their houses: Casa Batlló and La Pedrera, both among Gaudí’s works on the World Heritage List, stand among the shops of its Passeig de Gràcia, which runs down to the Plaça de Catalunya and the old town.

The grid of narrow streets laid out from 1753 beside the port, where the city’s beaches begin: more than 4.5 km of sand run from Sant Sebastià, the most westerly, to the Fòrum, past the Port Olímpic built for the 1992 Games. W stands at the western end, Hotel Arts by the Port Olímpic, with the city behind them both.

The old city, on the site of Roman Barcino: the Cathedral, begun in 1298, the lanes and squares around it, and beside it El Born, with Santa Maria del Mar, built between 1329 and 1383, and the Museu Picasso on Carrer Montcada. A town of its own until 1897; in mid-August its neighbours dress its streets for the Festa Major. The district holds Park Güell and Gaudí’s Casa Vicens.

What is the best time of year to visit Barcelona for a luxury trip?
